Delaware is a special place to practice law. Its courts command national respect, and the practice of law is conducted with enviable civility. Outside the courtroom and office, Delaware has a pleasing environment that celebrates the arts, recreation, and civic mission.
Wilmington is a remarkable blend of the amenities of a large city and the intimacy of a small town. Many of our attorneys have chosen us after working in larger cities. They find that a dollar goes much farther in Wilmington than in more congested areas. If they choose to do so, our associates quickly become homeowners in one of our popular urban or suburban settings.
The Legal Edge
The factors that have made Delaware a capital of corporate law make it a center for other legal fields such as patent litigation and bankruptcy. Delaware is the forum of choice for most large corporations and for a large numbers of alternative business entities. Delaware is the site of complex cases in corporate, bankruptcy, intellectual property, and other fields of law. We participate in many of these leading cases. Our local presence, together with our national practice that routinely takes us to other jurisdictions, provides our attorneys opportunities to litigate challenging and current issues.
Life Outside the Office
Wilmington provides the social, intellectual, entertainment, and recreational opportunities of a much larger city. Its cultural attractions include world-renowned museums and botanical gardens, first-run stage and theaters, and a vibrant, broadly supported arts community. Its musical offerings range from the Delaware Symphony to annual festivals of jazz, bluegrass, Celtic, blues, reggae, and chamber music. We also boast hugely popular minor league baseball and college sports teams.
Business In Wilmington
Delaware’s chemical and banking industries, the University of Delaware, Dover Air Base, the robust economy and the natural environment have attracted a diverse and educated population from throughout the nation and the world. A newcomer to Delaware does not remain an outsider for long. Many of Delaware’s civic leaders, including many of its public officials and judges, came to Delaware as adults.
Every Delawarean is different, but it is fair to generalize that the state’s political and social culture is characterized by a cooperative spirit and civility. Its government is noted for open process, accessible officials, fiscal responsibility, bipartisanship, and the pioneering Coastal Zone Act that preserves the integrity of its wetlands.
In the Proximity
We are near other major East Coast cities, yet convenient to both beaches and mountains. Residents of Wilmington are closer to Philadelphia’s sports and entertainment facilities than many Philadelphians; center city Philadelphia is less than 30 miles away. Both New York City and Washington, DC are less than two hours from our office. The Delaware beaches, the Jersey Shore, and the Pocono Mountains are all also within two hours. The renowned Chesapeake Bay is within an hour.
Legislative Impact
We are closely involved with the workings of the state and the city in which we are headquartered. Our attorneys play leading roles in the cultural, political, religious, athletic, and civic life of our community. We encourage our attorneys to become involved in community service attuned to their interests, priorities, and other commitments.
